Fishing For Ideas

The weekend offers a time for contemplation, reflection and hopefully some relaxation. Inspiration occasionally comes but this weekend fishing seemed to occupy the time.

I really didn’t know where to look in the stock market so I wanted some downtime and shut my brain off. I open a can of VB (FGL.AX) and decide to rig my Shimano stick (7309.JP). I’m poised to catch a nice bream in the Seaway. I take my trusty old Riviera to the spot where the currents change. I put a line in and wait. The sweat from my Oakley (OO.N) glasses starts to form and a second later I get a bite. A big one.

It was a good looking bream. Well over a kilo. I saved $20 from not going to Woolworths (WOW.AX) by catching that fish. I really enjoyed that. Now, somewhere I should go and find some inspiration.

Australia's Bull Run Continues

Yet again, the Ashes are convincingly back in Australia’s hands. Was there any doubt to the result? For the calendar year to 2006, Australia played 10 and won 10 tests. A nice winning rate of 100%.

Not too many teams or companies for that matter have a success rate like that. If the Australian Cricket Team was a company, would you invest in it? Surely the answer would be, Yes!

Not too many companies can claim a record like Australia over the last 8 years. 16 consecutive victories from 1999 to end of 2000. 11 Straight victories at the moment. A winning percentage over 85% for the best part of a decade. With that kind of chairmanship and result from the board of directors you would be most happy.

In addition, all the income from sell-out matches and memorabilia from popular players, breaking records and going into retirement.

With Warne and McGrath retiring though would this be the best time to sell your stock? Success, and often the lack of it affect share price.

Tottenham Hotspur (TTNM.L) – in the UK Premier League have lived under the shadow of their rival, Arsenal for the better part of 20 years. Since they have been listed, they have had a poor run of form and this has affected the share price. When they sell key players, again the share price falls. Fans and investors alike, have been frowning for a long time.

Our local boys, the Brisbane Broncos (BBL.AX) – won their first major premiership for half a decade and their share price reflected that success with all time highs.

If the Australian Cricket Team was available to invest in we probably would have been stakeholders long ago. Will that day ever come? Probably not so we have to settle for stuffing the English.
